Morden Police were alerted by a local resident of an attempted rental scam. The scam targets people posting online that they are looking for a rental property. The scam is two-fold, whereby someone will message the intended victim that they are aware of rental property that has just come available and provide an email contact for the property owner/manager. Once contacted the fraudster will list a real property in the intended victim’s area that is vacant, possibly for sale. If interested the fraudster will email a rental application and ask for a financial deposit in advance to secure the property while the application is processed. The victim will be directed to etransfer funds, likely to another email they claim is a co-owner or business associate. The victim will also be pressured to submit the application quickly, citing high interest in the property. The form asks for detailed personal information that might include a social insurance number, copy of bank records or their tax return information for the previous year. All of this important information can be used to steal your identity. Police advise asking to see the rental property in person before submitting any deposit.
